Wrestling With the Meaning of Faith

9 months ago · By J.D. King · 1 Min Read

What does it mean to operate in faith? How do believers function in the economy of the Kingdom? This is a question that I’ve been grappling with for several years.

I used to think if I read enough theology, I’d get immense faith. But that's not how this works. Biblical knowledge is beneficial, but abiding-trust is about more than the acquisition of information. Knowledge doesn’t automatically put you on the pathway of power.

In other instances, I imagined that if I interceded loud enough and continually echoed my decrees, something marvelous would materialize. I ultimately learned that faith isn’t dependent on volume or repetition.

On another occasion, I was listening to music and reflecting on God. I was trying to stir myself up. In my mind, faith depended on what was going on inside me. So, I constantly needed something extra to push me over the top.

These sincerely held assumptions didn’t help me, and they ultimately compelled me to adjust my mindset. There were insights I drew from Hebrews 11:6 that provided a unique perspective on faith.

“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

There is a part of faith embedded in our belief about God’s existence. It professes that scripture is accurate and that Jesus came in the flesh. But this understanding is not enough.

Acknowledging God’s existence is only part of the equation. If that’s all you are drawing from, you’ll be limited in your advancement. Something else must be activated.

Genuine faith acquires a heart-changing revelation about God. It discerns that the Lord is a rewarder.

“Anyone who approaches God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder” (Hebrews 11:6b).

Faith is stunted when it isn’t established on God’s nature. You must root yourself in His abundant goodness and love. The prayer of faith knows who Jesus is and how He operates. It exudes His virtue. It is confident in who He is and the kinds of things that He does.

When you know who Jesus is and how He operates, you are uniquely positioned to revolutionize the earth.
